A little bit of paradise at La Maison de Marovasa Be

If you dream of the dawn of time, deserted beaches, and mangroves, this address—a two-hour flight from Antananarivo in the northwest of the island—is for you.

Just 17 years ago, the French film producer Charles Gassot fell in love with an untouched area of Madagascar: the peninsula of Marovasa Be. After 15 years of construction and scouring flea markets worldwide, he opened this self-sufficient inn (a structure that is energetically independent, producing the amount of energy it needs) complete with wind turbines and solar panels. An original combination of guesthouse, palace, and ecolodge is here to greet you. Accessible by plane or boat from the port of Majahanga, the Maison de Marovasa Be has eight bedrooms, two spacious suites, and the Bougainville Villa for large families. The restaurant is heavily loaded with seafood and fruits and vegetables from the garden, a cuisine that is both local and international with French, Italian, and Thai influences—and all of it is served on china from the famed Hotel Meurice from the 1940s, under Murano chandeliers... A unique address in the world, this is an ‘elsewhere' to free yourself from all your obligations.
