Everything is quiet here. There are no cars, just bikes, sailboats, and paintings. A lot of paintings ...
Because of the modern art museum that has been in a building that looks like a boathouse since 1958.Do not be fooled by appearances. This is the most interesting collection in northern Europe. Its different directors have all bequeathed their tastes and their bias to what is now an internationally renowned museum. The first, Ponthus Hultén, was a knowledgeable collector. He donated more than 700 works, including sculptures by Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely, and Alexander Calder, which are in the garden. Today, more than 130,000 works (including about 100,000 photographs, making it one of the largest collections in the world) have taken hold on the island.
After highlighting Nordic Art, French Modernism and American creations from the 1950s and 1960s, the museum has taken a keen interest on contemporary women artists. The museum's success launched the creation of a new branch, which opened in 2009 in Malmö, northern Denmark.
